Keeping your car in tip top condition is a good defense against accidents caused by faulty brakes, steering or other unmaintained elements of your car. People spend a lot of time, effort and money keeping their car in tip top condition. While this is very important, preventing accidents has more to do with the condition of yourself rather then the condition of your car.
Most accidents are in fact not caused by a faulty vehicle. The majority of accidents are caused by human error. Day dreaming, texting or speaking on your cell phone while driving and driver fatigue are some of the main culprits. While driving under the influence has long been known to be one of the most preventable causes of accidents, it is less well know that driver fatigue can be just as dangerous.
Driver Fatigue
Driver fatigue is pretty simple to understand. A drowsy driver is not focused and can make the same bad judgment calls on the road as an intoxicated driver. In addition, a tired driver’s reflexes are slow and he can not respond in the same way that he would when not tired.
Those at risk for Driver Fatigue
There are many people at risk for driver fatigue. If you work the night shift and drive home you are tired and will not be at your best for driving. Taxi drivers and other night drivers travel the roads when fatigued. If you stayed out all night and drive home in the morning you will similarly not be alert behind the wheel. However, long monotonous highways in the middle of the summer can have a dulling effect even on a rested driver. The arduous road conditions can play tricks on your mind causing you to “space out” while driving. The monotony and haziness from the hot weather can have a hypnotizing affect on many drivers.
What you can do
Clearly, your best defense against drowsy driving is to get a good night sleep before a long road trip. Similarly, if you work the night shift you should sleep sufficiently during the day. Eating well will also help as it will keep your energy levels up which helps your concentration. If you know these things aren’t possible, you may consider taking public transportation instead of driving your car when tired.
Keep in mind that drowsy driving is just as dangerous as drinking and driving. If you drive, you operate a lethal weapon. It is your responsibility to be as alert and focused as possible to prevent accidents that can result in injury, damage or even death.

In more recent decades the UK has experienced what most would consider mild winters, however in the past few years things appear to be changing. The last few years have seen unprecedented cold weather and heavy amounts of snow hit Great Britain to a level many have never witnessed in their lifetimes. This freezing weather and thick snow has had a significant impact on the economy and infrastructure of the island. Of the many inhabitants of GB, it is perhaps motorists that are hardest hit when this harsh weather comes, with thousands getting stranded for long periods of time. Here are a few things that as a motorist you can do to prepare yourself for this coming winter.
Tyres
Tyres are one of the most important aspects to consider when going for a drive in the snow. In other European countries where snow is frequent, winter preparations far exceed those made here in Great Britain. Snow-tyres or ‘winter wheels’ are common place and the populations are adjusted to driving in the white stuff. Winter tyres which offer more tread and therefore grip are becoming more and more popular here and some who live in rural areas are even beginning to use snow chains on their tyres to get about. Some say that reducing the pressure in your tyres marginally will allow for better traction when diving in snow and ice; however it’s worth doing further research before implementing this. Tyres should have at least 3mm of tread for safe winter driving.
Essentials for Your Car
Before you head out into the snow, whether on the way to work, or to the shops, it’s always worth checking a few important things on your vehicle. Firstly check for Antifreeze, this should be present in both your engine coolant and windscreen wiper fluid. This is an important essential to winter driving as temperatures are often so cold that sleet and snow will refreeze to your windscreen on occasion.
If you get caught in extremely freezing weather, or are intending on leaving your car over night at your destination, then make sure that your locks will not freeze you out by using a lubricant such as WD-40. Additionally grease up the seals with Vaseline or likewise to stop the metal aspects of the door and body freezing together.
Keeping a tow rope in your boot may come in handy, especially if you were to get into difficulties and a passing motorist with a tow-bar would lend a helping hand. Other hardware that will certainly come in handy would be a shovel and jump leads, as well as some rock salt which you can use to melt snow around your tyres in a drift.
Essentials for You
On occasion, through no fault of your own, you may find yourself stranded in the snow. This could be due to an increase in adverse weather or even traffic, but the reality is you could be stuck for hours and in the worst case scenario have to sleep in, or abandon your vehicle. There are some excellent things that you can keep with you to make yourself more comfortable and maximise your chances to get out of the snow and safely home.
In your boot you should pack extra sets of warm clothes like an extra hoody, a woollen scarf and hat made from a thick wool like King Cole DK which will not only keep you warm but dry quickly also. A can of de-ice and a ice scraper can be used to clear your windows if they were to freeze up.
Food! When is it not a good idea to stock up on food and drink? Keeping aside some provisions in your boot can pay dividends when you become stuck or delayed. Foods such as chocolate bars are high energy and can be great to keep in your tuck box as well as a flask of tea or hot chocolate.
Usually when you read an article about the “Most Dangerous Roads,” you are typically reading about roads that are very steep, have a lot of twists and turns, maybe have a high speed limit and a lot of snow, etc. But what about the actual conditions of the roads? If some roads are very “worn,” wouldn’t that also make them pretty dangerous?
When you take into consideration things like condition, poor bridges, and congestion, those factors could definitely deem a road dangerous. Add on top of that fatalities, and you are definitely onto something.
So, with those factors in mind, let’s take a look at the 5 states in the United States with the most dangerous roads:
1. Louisiana
Louisiana has been found to have the worst roads in the entire country. With Louisiana facing so many hurricanes, etc their roads have definitely been a part of the collateral damage. In 2009, Louisiana had the second highest number of road fatalities (after Montana). They were also found to have very poor roads and bridges.
With their poor roads, they do have some budget set aside for them to be able to make repairs. They have the 8th highest amount of funds (out of the 50 states) given to them by the Federal Highway Fund to make repairs on their state’s roads. So with those funds, hopefully we will be able to see Louisiana’s road conditions and safety increase.
2. North Carolina
North Carolina is second on the list of states with the most dangerous roads. For bad bridges and congestion, they are in the top 10 worst in the country. For all of the other bad road condition factors, they place in the top 20 in the country. So, it’s not that they have any one really bad condition or factor. It’s that, overall, all of their conditions add up to make their roads considered one of the most dangerous.
North Carolina definitely doesn’t have the same funds allocated to it as Louisiana. They rank 44 out of the 50 states as to the amount allocated to them by the Federal Highway Fund. There still is hope for North Carolina, though. They are working on a new program to install solar panels to help power its airport. With the amount of money their Department of Transportation will save on the airport costs from these solar panels, hopefully they will able to put some of that money towards road repairs.
3. Oklahoma
Oklahoma is third on the list for most dangerous roads in the United States. They have the third worst conditions in the entire country, and their bridges are ranked the 13th worst. Their road fatalities are also high. The state has released some reports on road safety, and they are hoping to work to improve all of these conditions.
4. West Virginia
Next up we have West Virginia. West Virginia has very high road fatality rates, even though they have low levels of traffic congestion. This could be due to the fact that they have very poor road and bridge conditions. Their Department of Transportation isn’t reportedly making many big moves to improve road and bridge conditions, but they have worked to increase driver knowledge on how to properly navigate some of their more unique road conditions (roundabouts, etc).
5. Arkansas
The 5th most dangerous state (when it comes to roads) in the U.S. is Arkansas. They have the 5th highest amount of road fatalities, and they rank 10th for poor road conditions. They are ranked 11th in the nation for the amount of funds allocated to them from the Federal Highway Fund. So hopefully they, like a couple others on this list, will be able to use those funds to increase conditions, decrease fatalities, etc.

Driving is already dangerous enough with texting, road rage and drunk drivers but Mother Nature just loves making it worse. To be sure nature is a harsh mistress and the majority of the United States has some form of dangerous environmental dangers to drive in. In the South it is flash floods and thunderstorms. In the North is snow and ice. The Northwest has both and even somewhere generally pleasant like Southern California can have the Santa Ana winds. Here are some tips for dealing with rain.
When it Rains…
First of all turn your head lights on. If the rain is especially heavy you may even turn your hazards on. Worst case scenario you may have to pull over and wait it out. That being said here are some tips.
Drive Slow and Take Your Time
– Rain is no time to be in a hurry and will result in a surefire wreck. Plan to take your time. Yes, that mean leaving for work fifteen or twenty minutes earlier but it is better than totaling your car. This also means give yourself more time to start taping the brakes. Don’t wait until you are right in front of the red light, give yourself time.
Never Slam the Breaks
– When it rains the roads become slick for two reasons. Obviously there is the water but what a lot of people don’t realize is that oil and grease build up on the road as well. When it rains these chemicals float on the water and make it slicker. Fortunately most cars have Antilock Brakes (ABS.) Most cars, even used vehicles from the last two decades, have ABS. Your ABS will automatically adjust to road conditions. If you don’t have ABS then slowly pump the brakes until you stop. Slamming the break is a sure fire way to cause you to skid out. Instead tap the break repeatedly as you slow down.
Avoid Deep Water –
If you live in a flash flood area you will know how quickly water can rise up. Areas that look okay can be deceptively deep. Watch the cars ahead to see how well they do. If a truck has problems going through it then your Camry most assuredly will so plan on going around a different route. Avoid deep puddles as well. They cause drag on your car and could spray enough water into the engine to stall out. Stay to the middle of the road if you can.

Cars are an important part of modern society and yet they are also a very dangerous part of it, something which is easy to forget when flipping through Carcraft magazine. However, some are more dangerous than others. Choosing a safe car for your child to ride in is an important task for a parent and should be given its due consideration.
People tend to have their own opinions about which cars are safest based on personal experience. Many people believe that larger vehicles are safer including SUVs and minivans. While these vehicles make good options for large families, they are not the safest cars, statistically speaking.
The overall safest group of vehicles is large four-door sedans. Less prone to rollover issues than SUVs and big enough to hold their own on a the road, the traditional family car is often the safest option for a family. However, the class as a whole may be the safest but individuals vehicles within the class can still be more or less safe so it is important to choose carefully.
It is worth noting that modern SUVs are safer than older ones. Rollover accidents are the main reason why SUVs are not considered as safe as cars and electronic stability control systems can reduce one-vehicle rollover accidents by up to 77 percent. As of 2012, all new SUVs sold in the U.S. are equipped with electronic stability control systems.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provide most of the data on the safety of various cars. They use tests designed to assess the impact of a crash on various parts of the vehicle and on the dummies inside who stand in for the driver and passengers. Some of the assessments made by both groups are similar and some are different.
IIHS and NHTSA ratings can differ because of their slightly different tests. It is difficult for a car to score extremely well on both tests so a vehicle that has moderate ratings from one and high ratings from the other is probably a good, safe choice. The rare vehicle that does score highly on both tests is definitely a good safety pick.
Cars are compared against other vehicles in the size class to determine the final safety score. This means that larger vehicles with high safety scores are safer than smaller vehicles with high safety scores. Large sedans are, statistically speaking, the safest vehicles on the road. Interestingly, the same does not seem to hold true for SUVs which have similar rates of fatalities across all available sizes.

Car accidents occur frequently, and many of these unfortunate incidents happen because of vehicle operators that drive under the influence of something, not just alcohol. There are so many things that can influence the mental and physical capacity of an individual, such as illegal drugs and also prescription medications. DUI or drunk driving is a serious offense. Those who are charged with DUIs are individuals who exceed the legal alcohol limit, which is 0.08% blood alcohol content (BAC). BAC measures the level of alcohol intoxication, and this could slightly vary from state to state. In case you or a loved is charged with DUI, you will most likely need the help of an expert DUI lawyer since punishments and penalties are pretty serious. Furthermore, it’s always a good idea to cooperate with authorities to avoid aggravating your case.
What Aggravates DUI Charges?
1. Refusing Sobriety Tests
There are several types of sobriety tests used to measure drivers’ level of intoxication. BAC is usually tested using breath devices, blood examinations, as well as urine analysis. Other sobriety tests that can be done in the field include the following:
– Standing on One Leg Test
A person is requested to stand on one leg, which means that he should be able to lift one of his legs a few inches from the ground. A sober individual will have no problem doing this. But someone who is inebriated will easily lose balance or sway. In addition to pretty obvious movements, involuntary muscle twitching or tremors are examined too, such as quavering of the body or eyelids.
– Walk and Turn Test
You must have already seen this type of test being done on reality TV cop shows. Here, a person is asked to walk 9 steps, making sure that the heel touches the toe on each step. The individual is requested to take 9 steps forward, turn, and then walk 9 steps back. This seems pretty easy enough, but it’s a huge challenge to anyone who has had a few drinks. Smashed people who take this test could lose balance, be unable to walk heel to toe, or fail to walk a straight line.
Other tests include: Finger to Nose Test, Rhomberg Balance Test, or test for nystagmus or eyeball jerking.
2. Drunk Driving with Passengers
Stiffer punishments and penalties await those who are caught drunk driving with passengers. Punishments are more severe if passengers are minors or very young, specifically below 12 years of age.
3. Driving Improperly
A person will make his DUI charge worse if he drives improperly. This pertains to driving in the opposite direction of a one-way road or driving above the speed limit. Running red lights, overtaking other drivers, or displaying offensive road behavior can all worsen a DUI charge. Improper driving can lead to more serious road mishaps, and punishment is more brutal if there’s property damage or if other individuals are also hurt. Many intoxicated drivers who drive poorly also cause road traffic accidents that take the lives of many.

Emergency Car Kits Part 3 That is what else should you be “packing” in your trunk , glove box or console that motorists and auto owners should have included in their roadside emergency auto or truck kit ? While its true that you cannot carry the whole kitchen sink there are additions to the standard kit that expert auto mechanics , your dealership service center technical writer or your local motor league may well advise.
Drivers Carry a Spare Fan Belt :
First of all a spare fan belt or in newer cars single serpentine belt is good insurance , especially if you are starting on a long road trip. One person delivering a truck for an auto dealership friend went on a long trek all the way from Winnipeg Canada to Whitehorse in the Yukon. Lo and behold in the wilds of Northern Alberta the belt “went” . Having that belt on hand sure made time and efforts a less easier and less stressful. On top of that he was able to deliver that vehicle on time to a most grateful customer. A word of note . If you own an exotic specialty car, though its great to be unique on the road its also lonely if you need help and mechanical assistance. Its recommended to take along with you all the special tools needed to install that new “fan belt”. On top of that even if replaced belts are stretched somewhat its a prudent and wise idea to keep unbroken belts around , just in case , in the trunk of the vehicle , or in a box in the truck bed to use as emergency spares. These can be a temporary lifesaver until you can get down the road or highway to the nearest garage or auto dealer service center.
Stock a Spare Door Key Handy:
Secondly it is important to have a spare door key in your wallet or purse. You want to be able to get into the passenger compartment. Its not as easy as it once was to unlock vehicles if keys are locked inside or inadvertently lost or misplaced. A simple hangar and fishing around used to be all you needed , plus some expertise or patience. Not any more. Yet on top of that with modern electronic and auto theft deterrent electronics and immobilizer harnesses its not only a standard mechanical key , but one with the matching electronic rfid gizmo to fire your engine to get you down the road. Yet this offers a good two step safety opportunity for you. Have a mechanical only key cut at your local hardware or big box store. You can keep this spare key in your wallet , hidden somewhere tied on the car within easy reach or in a commercial magnetic key box. The beauty is that this hidden key , or the key in your wallet will let you get in your vehicle should you lock yourself out. Yet a thief cannot start and drive off with your vehicle with it. A good tip from auto dealers is that if you only have that mechanical key and lose your start-up key with the rfid chip matching to your vehicle’s individual fingerprinted key-lock , that with access to your passenger compartment and glove box , is that your original auto factory owner’s manual will have a key record plate in it. With this information , specific to your unique vehicle a trained and licensed locksmith can cut a replacement electronic key for you. Then you are off on your way down the road to your destination.
Make Your Travels Easy – Preparation of a Full & Comprehensive Auto Roadside Emergency Car Kit:
It can be said that a major lesson of life is to learn to prevent trouble rather than having to react to it. By preparing your auto emergency and safety kit fully ahead of time you can save yourself a lot of wasted time and energy. After all a major role of fire departments is fire prevention rather than just fighting fires and disasters.

Only in the Hollywood film industry, there exists the greatest place to imagine, create and most importantly share an epically undeniable car accident scene. Not only am I gripping the arm rests in the theater with full adrenaline pumping as these cars are zipping around corners and the film artists are giving me impossible views to augment the true adrenaline rush. But, when the scene finally comes to a rest I realize I haven’t been breathing the entire time. I quickly dart my eyes with an amazingly epic smile smeared across my face ensuring that those beside me know, “That just happened!”
But, what is it really that makes these scenes so addictive and crucial to every action movie? I’m not saying that Transformers change into cars solely because now they can have car accident scenes, but it doesn’t hurt. Or, maybe we should look at the car chase scene as a prelude to the auto-explosion finale with the smug character walking away. Either way you choose to view it, a vehicle accident scene does wonders for any film. So, in tribute to these scenes I offer my top 5 collection of most epic accident scenes.
I always save the best for last, here we go…
#5 – Death Race
This movie gets the lowest on my list mainly because it was the whole movie. The scene did not create an epic climax where you could say “remember that car scene!” because you would be referring to the entire movie. It’s 5th of the list because if you are into car scenes and accidents, you’re bound to be thoroughly entertained.
The premise of this movie is a prison race where the prisoner who survives is rewarded with freedom. The jail warden has devised this race as a form of entertainment, gore and income. The prisoners work on their cars decking them out with speed, armor and most importantly fire power. The most vital part is the driver with the instincts to get around the track and survive to see another race. It’s epic – watch it!
#4 – Matrix: Matrix Reloaded
If you like action, you’ve seen The Matrix. If you claim you like action, and haven’t seen The Matrix claim another statement. So, let me set the scene for what is going on in this iconic freeway chase scene without going into the full beauty of The Matrix at this time. Not to sound urgent or anything, but there is one guy that can save the world, and there is one key maker who can give him access to save the world. Of course the Agents (bad guys) don’t want him to save the world, the bad are always happy in their own filth, if only someone could show them the light.
Ultimately, save the key maker save the world. Of course to add drama to drama the key maker is being driven down a congested freeway on a motorcycle, the least protected vehicle of them all. The scene turns, and before your brain can catch up with your eyes there are two semi’s heading straight for each other ending the life of the key-maker. It’s epic – watch it!
#3 – The Terminator
I’m not talking about Terminator 2, 3 or even Terminator Salvation, I’m talking about the original Terminator. Let it be well known as hard as it to differentiate Arnold Schwarzenegger from his façade as the governor, he is, and always will be The Terminator, a cyborg assassin sent from the future to kill one individual.
The scene that always gets me is when he hops on his motorcycle wearing his fashionable leather jacket pursuing Sarah Connor. Even though Sarah and Doyle continue to switch places driving the car and have multiple metal dynamite sticks that don’t phase the great terminator, or the motorcycle never gains speed on their pick-up truck it still is one of the most memorable car chases of its time. It’s epic – watch it!
#2 – Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon
Why did this get #2? Because not only are these vehicles transformers but they have the mobility and actions that we wish every vehicle had. No matter how hard the directors work to bring out how exhilarating being tossed into the air by a car while your car transforms into a robot to avoid a crash and then catches you back in the passenger seat as though nothing ever happened, it’s action at its best.
The particular scene I am talking about is when 3 Autobots are being chased by 3 black SUV’s which are Decepticons. As the transformers chase the Autobots down the freeway and their destruction is taking out every vehicle in their path with the urgency of Shia LeBeouf screams for Bumblebee to move faster. It’s epic – watch it!
#1 – Blues Brothers
Why does this deserve #1? Because, the Blues Brothers mixed comedy and car chases with style. Not to mention their iconic outfits, but the style of driving is what gets me every time. If there’s not a door the Blues Brothers knew you could always make one, and who needs to walk through a mall if you have a car?
The scene I love is the mall chase scene, when they are barraging through store wall after store wall commenting on the products available in each store. I can’t say enough how much this scene deserves #1 for so many reasons. Might I dare to say the others would not exist in such a spectacular light had it not been for this scene? No, that might be too bold a statement.
I know we all have our top 5 car chases and accident scenes that we will always proclaim the most iconic scene. There is no mistake that there is great beauty in a well thought out car chase which brings new theatrics and elements to the big screens near you. Alright, tell me what are your top 5?

There is no question in the world that drunk driving is dangerous. There are laws in every state that govern against it. What most people don’t realize is that there is just as much danger in drowsing driving as there is in driving under the influence. Discovery Channel’s MythBusters did an entire experiment about this and found that sleepy drivers were far less stable on the road than their drunken counterparts. That should be a wake-up call for all of us.
Causes of Drowsy Driving
Drowsiness is obviously the cause of drowsy driving, but what causes that in the first place? The chaos of the modern world doesn’t allow much of anyone to get a decent night of sleep. Mothers, college students, businesspeople, and the like all struggle to find moments to snooze. As a result, many of them will “push through” the day because they have to, even if that means driving while sleepy. If you are prone to pulling all-nighters for one reason or another, this information will hopefully convince you to stop.
How to Minimize and Avoid Drowsy Driving Symptoms
Sleep is going to be the key to keeping you safe on the road. If you can’t get enough sleep at night, you need to try to take a 20 minute power nap before you start driving. This is supposed to be equivalent to a cup of coffee in terms of the energy it can provide for you. Set an alarm on your phone and just snooze for 20 full minutes. You should wake up refreshed and more alert.
If you are having trouble seeing or keeping your eyes open, pull over and call someone to pick you up. Get a cab, rent a car, take a bus…do whatever it takes. There is no destination that is worth putting your life at risk, especially when doing so could cause harm to other people. If you start to think about all of the people you might be hurting on the road, you should make the logical move to stop driving.
You’re not Superman, Wonder Woman, Lora Croft, or a Jedi night. The sooner you start to realize the limits of your very-human body, the sooner you should be able to see how dumb it is to drive tired. Don’t rely on energy drinks to get you home at night. Act responsibly on the road so you will have a chance to be on it again in the future.

Advice for Dealing With the Aftermath of Road Traffic Accidents
If you are one of the thousands of people that has been injured in a road traffic accident, then it may be worth seeking some injury advice. You may be entitled to compensation and you can discuss Road Traffic Accident Claims with a lawyer. Anyone that has been the victim of a car accident is able to seek legal advice from an injury lawyer. The injury lawyers are prepared to deal with cases no matter how severe the injury. They advise on cases from whiplash to someone in need of equipment to deal with a disability.
Whiplash
Whiplash is a very common injury in road traffic accidents. Whiplash is caused by road traffic accidents when the victim’s head is jolted suddenly; this can cause the victim neck pains, which can sometimes be severe. The victim may also experience pain in their shoulders and back. Most cases of whiplash only last a couple of weeks, but there are some cases which can last months and possibly years. Victims should visit a doctor immediately in order to fully recover properly and gain some professional medical advice. An injury lawyer should also be contacted to discuss the possibility of compensation.
Disabilities
It is not uncommon for a victim to suffer a disability following a road traffic accident. A disability is a mental or physical condition that limits a person’s day to day activities. Following the accident, the next steps can be discussed with an injury lawyer; they will ensure you find acceptable care, if necessary, and you are provided with any equipment you may need. They will also talk you through compensation and what you are entitled to. Injury lawyers understand that the time following an accident is stressful, so they aim to be as efficient as possible and sympathetic to your needs.
Fatal Accidents
Dealing with the loss of a loved one is not easy and it is sometimes made more difficult when dealing with financial issues. If the fault is of the other driver, then a family member may be eligible to claim compensation. Compensation for fatal accidents is split into two different types of claim: ‘The Deceased’s Claim’ and ‘The Dependency Claim.’ You may also qualify for ‘bereavement damages.’ If you have lost a loved one and you are not sure what to do next, then contact an injury lawyer to discuss your next steps.
Make sure the registration details of the person in the other vehicle has been documented in case you require this information again. The accidents listed above are not the only types of accidents, so if you have any questions about an injury you have sustained, then contact an injury lawyer to help you, no matter the severity of your injury. If you have been in a road traffic accident and believe you are entitled to compensation or other claims, then contact an injury lawyer as soon as possible. It is feasible that you are entitled to more than you have anticipated, so don’t be afraid to contact a lawyer.
