Practical Tips for Learner Drivers – Pass Your Test First Time!
Learning to drive, you either take to it like a duck to water or you end up having to repeat your test again and again. You are required to absorb a lot of information during your driving lessons while showing your instructor that you can put what you have learned to practical use. Your instructor will give you all of the information that you need to be able to pass your test first time, the rest is up to you. Here are some simple tips that you might find of use whether you are still learning, a newly qualified driver or a seasoned pro.
Before You Set Off
Just as a pilot checks his cockpit before he commits himself to the flight, so you too need to check the status of your car before you set off. This is something that the examiner will be making sure that you do when you head out for your test. Ensure that you do not start the engine until everything on the list has been carried out.- Doors Closed: Most cars now show a warning light if a door or the boot are not closed properly. Make sure that all of the doors are secure before you set off.
- Get Comfortable: Make sure that your seat is in the right position to enable you to reach both the pedals and the steering wheel comfortably. Make sure this is done before you start the engine.
- Check your Mirrors: In order for you to be in the best position to drive you need to be able to see all around the outside of your car. All of your mirrors need to be angled so that you can see everything without craning your neck. Make sure all three mirrors are checked and adjusted before you set off.
- Buckle Up: Make sure that you put your seatbelt on before you start the engine.
On the Road
It sounds really simple but there are a lot of people who end up failing their driving test because they forget the old ‘Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre’ routine. It doesn’t matter whether you are pulling out of a roadside parking place, performing a three point turn or pulling into traffic you need to perform this simple routine. Not only does it make you able to see if it is safe for you to start to move, it also lets the drivers in the vehicles around you know what your intentions are.- Mirror: Check all of your mirrors to make sure that there is enough clear space on the road to allow you to perform your manoeuvre.
- Signal: This is where a lot of people’s driving skills are lacking. It would seem that just because they know where they are going they assume that everyone else does too. By signalling you are letting both vehicle users and pedestrians know that you are about to move your car into the road.
- Manoeuvre: Carry out your planned manoeuvre and continue to check your mirrors for possible obstructions or hazards.
