When looking at a new car, most people want something that not only looks good, but also doesn’t cost the earth to run. Throw in low carbon emissions, which means a lower tax band and you’re well and truly on to a winner.
Here then I look at an assortment of hatchbacks which not only look sleek, but also deliver plenty of miles to the gallon so you’ll never find yourself scratching your head thinking, another fuel stop!?
Toyota Yaris Hybrid Hatchback
While the Yaris hatchback doesn’t deliver quite the refined drive as other cars in its class, it does offer plenty of luxury equipment, either as standard or for a little extra.
What’s more, the Toyota also offers a pretty good mpg, averaging around 80.7.
Peugeot 208 1.4 e-HDI
A stylish looking addition to the Peugeot catalogue, this hatchback, or supermini if you prefer, trumps the Yaris Hybrid in terms of fuel efficiency, offering a more than impressive 83.1 mpg.
It also boasts stop start technology to further help cut down on unwanted exhaust emissions.
Citroen C3 1.4 e-HDI 70 Airdream EGS
Currently Citroen’s most economical hatchback yet, the C3 e-HDI boasts the same impressive 83.1 mpg as its parent company Peugeot’s 208.
Like the Peugeot, it looks great too, but it also features an EGS gearbox.
Renault Clio 1.5 dCi 90 ECO
With a name including the word ECO, you would expect the Renault Clio to be quite an economical option. By all accounts the latest offering of the Clio is capable of delivering a staggering 88.3mpg, beating both the Toyota and Peugeot to the green punch.
The latest Renault also looks the part too, giving buyers the chance to inject some vavavoom into their daily commute.
Hyundai i20 1.1 CRDI Blue
Neck and neck with the Clio in terms of mpg, this Hyundai model is a slightly more attractive option for those on more of a budget as it comes competitively priced, with many models priced cheaper than their rivals.
Other contenders that didn’t quite make the cut, but are worthy of a mention include the Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 CDTi EcoFlex, Renault Megane 1.5 dCi and the Kia Rio hatchback.
One thing is for certain, if you are looking to find a car that not only looks great, but also delivers plenty of miles to the gallon, as well as a low tax band, then there is more than enough out there at present to meet your needs.
