Winter Driving In Michigan
KNOW WHAT TO DO BEFORE IT HAPPENS
We all know that driving in the great state of Michigan can be very difficult, especially during the winter months. You have to deal with ice, snow, high winds and of course the blistering cold temperature. Every person deals with driving in bad weather differently, but there are some things you should always remember. Michigan is very serious about keeping the roads safe and clear for everyone, but you should always be prepared on your own. Having the right tires, the correct vehicle and the proper tools can make a huge difference. Driving in the ice and snow is very dangerous and should never be taken lightly. There are certain things you need to know when dealing with a Michigan winter behind the wheel.
Tires, Tires and Tires
Having the correct tires can be the difference between life and death. Seriously, the right tires can keep any vehicle from sliding off the road or even into another vehicle. Yes, even with the proper tires you need to drive with caution; however a good set of winter tires will make all difference when taking turns, stopping at lights or getting stuck in the snow. There’s no need to get stranded or get into an accident because of a bad set of tires.
Defensive Driving
The decisions you make are just as, if not more important than the tools you have. The main thing is, you need to know what you’re going to do before it happens. Never assume your vehicle can handle the winter conditions. Be prepared and think about every aspect that can go wrong. When driving in the nasty winter weather, here are some tips you should know:
- Leave plenty of distance between you and the car in front of you
- Decrease your speed around every single turn
- Always brake gently to avoid skidding
- Never use cruise control
- Always keep your windshield and mirrors clean
- Keep your lights on at all times
- If available, remember to use the lowest gears when you can
- Don’t pass any other vehicles, unless you absolutely have to
Know your vehicle
When driving in bad weather, the vehicle you are in definitely makes a difference. Whether you’re driving a Cadillac in Grand Rapids or a Ford in Detroit, Michigan drivers need to select the correct automobile for the crazy winter weather. Plus, knowing your car or truck is big. Being aware of what it can and cannot handle could save your life. Be safe out there in Michigan!
