Nothing can wreak havoc on your day like being blindsided by another vehicle while you’re out driving around town. It doesn’t really matter what you’re doing, a car accident will snap you back to reality like nothing else.
Whether you’re hit from behind, the side or head on, the potential for serious injury and even death is always there. If you aren’t injured too seriously, it’s wise to follow some specific steps anytime you’re in a traffic accident.
Get Your Bearings
If you aren’t seriously injured and you’re still in control of yourself, the first thing y need to do is get your bearings and make sure everyone in your vehicle is ok. Try to remain as calm as possible because that calm demeanor will rub off on everyone else in your car.
If your car is still drivable you may want to move it off to the side. Now would be the time to set those flares you’ve never had to use, or at least flick on your hazards.
Call Emergency Vehicles
When you’re convinced that everyone with you is safe, get on your phone or borrow someone else’s and call 911 or the proper emergency number to tell them about the accident. Once that is done, call your insurance agent while you wait for the emergency crews to get there. Ideally, you’re supposed to call your insurance company as soon as possible, so getting on it while the police are on the way would be perfect if you can do it.
Don’t Admit Fault
Do yourself a huge favor and don’t discuss anything about the accident with anyone but the police or your insurance company. Don’t admit fault even if you feel like it was your fault. You should exchange personal information and insurance information with the other driver or drivers.
Gather Up Information
Take the time to write down all of the names, addresses, telephone numbers and license numbers of anyone who witnessed the accident, or anyone who was involved in the accident. If you’re able, you may want to take some pictures of the accident scene, if you feel it would help you out. Avoid giving any recorded statements or interviews of any kind before you speak to your insurance agent, and don’t sign your name to anything you are unfamiliar with.
Call a Personal Injury Lawyer
Once all the dust has settled and the scene has been cleared up, if you feel that someone else was at fault you may want to contact a personal injury lawyer. Sometimes, it may feel as though you’re ok, but the real injuries won’t be felt until the next day or even several days later.
By contacting a personal injury lawyer, you’ll not only find out if you have a case for compensation, but you’ll also ensure your rights are protected throughout the process.
