The Skills Necessary to Sell Used Cars
Being a used car salesman can be difficult. You work hard to sell good quality cars, but you are fighting against a stereotype. Many people see you as the slimy, smarmy salesman from movies, who is only out for money and doesn’t care about the condition of the car. While this is untrue, people will mistrust you from the time they first step onto your lot.
Luckily there are things you can do to prove to buyers that you are a good person who will sell them a great car to fit their specific needs and budget. In order to be the best salesperson you can, follow these tips to create trust in customers and do your job to the best of your ability.
Cater to Every Customer
Each buyer is different. Their budget is different, their needs are different, and so are their preferences. Respect each person and cater to their needs. If you do this, you will sell each person a car that they will love.
Know Your Product/Inventory
What’s the use of being a car salesperson if you don’t know the first thing about cars? You don’t need to be a mechanic, but know a little bit about what’s under each car’s hood so you can accurately answer questions. You should also know what cars are on the lot. If you can confidently lead buyers around the lot, your chances of making a sale will increase.
People Buy Service
Just like any other retail or service job, you are selling yourself as well as the product. If you are enthusiastic and honest, the vehicle will look much better to customers. Be confident in your product, and you will inspire it in buyers.
Dress Well
Think of that slimy, greasy-haired used car salesman. Then, dress the opposite of him. Wear a clean suit or dress pants and nice shirt if you are a man, or nice slacks or a dress suit if you are a woman. If you look professional, buyers will trust your judgment.
Follow Up
Congratulations, you’ve sold a car! To give your buyer the best customer service they’ve ever experienced, follow up with them periodically for the first year. This will not only thrill your customer, but they will probably tell their friends and relatives about your stellar service. This is especially important in the South, like if you are selling used cars in Mission TX. Politeness is key.
All in all, remember to project confidence in yourself and your product. If you know what you are doing and selling, customers will be more apt to buy from you.
