After spending years driving around in a less than desirable vehicle, you’ve finally decided it’s time to add a brand new car to your driveway. You’re used to purchasing cars from used car lots or people who you’ve found online, so you’re really looking for some hints when tackling dealerships.
Be Respectful
You always want to keep the conversations respectful. If an employee is rude to you, ask to speak to a manager. Otherwise, you should remain polite and calm. During negotiations, don’t start demanding a lower price or slamming your fists into the desk. These actions are not going to help you at all. Remember, the salesperson wants to sell you the car, but there are rules that he or she must follow.
Haggling Tools
You can’t just walk in and say that you think the car should be worth $5,000 less than its sticker price. Shop around online to get an array of prices in the area. You should also look to Edmunds and the Kelley Blue Book Value to determine the price of your car. Print out all of this information, so you can show proof of the numbers you’re saying. However, you won’t always get the price on those websites. Sometimes, these sites do not represent the current market value of the vehicle, so it’s important to use as many tools as possible.
Test Drivers
Sales representatives should always offer you a test drive in the car that you’re considering. If you are not offered one, you should ask for it. Even if a car looks beautiful from the outside, you might find that the seat belt doesn’t fit properly or that it doesn’t have the exact feeling for which you were hoping.
Any Extras
When you’re discussing the price for the car and learning more about it, the representative will likely be telling you of what the vehicle is capable. Take notes as he or she is speaking, and, at the end, ask if all of that is included with the car. There may be some features, such as special radio systems or navigation tools, that will require a higher fee. Before you sign your name, you want to be sure that you know the total cost of everything.
Warranties
A
brand new car is likely going to come with a warranty, and you want to question it if it doesn’t. You must be aware of all of the rules and regulations governing your warranty. Some dealerships will offer an extended service warranty, which provides you protection for awhile down the road. Once again, be sure to have the representative explain all of the terms and read them for yourself in the agreement. You don’t want to have problems down the road.
