Mazda MX-5 GT Concept Wows Crowds at Goodwood
The recent Goodwood Festival of Speed was a great chance for people to see brand new cars from some of the world’s biggest manufacturers.
Mazda was one such manufacturer, taking advantage of its stand to show off its new Mazda Takeri sedan concept and all-new CX-5. The company also used the opportunity to gauge customer reaction to its 205bhp Mazda MX-5 GT Concept.
The MX-5 GT Concept is entirely road-legal, and was on display from 28 June to 1 July. It also took part in the ‘First Glance’ category’s hillclimb and other driving events. The Mazda MX-5 GT was inspired by the GT race car programme, and is built by racing specialists.
It produces 205bhp from its 2.0 litre petrol engine. Aerodynamic assistance is provided by the car’s carbon front splitter, a rear diffuser and boot spoiler. The MX-5 GT Concept also has Recaro seats to enhance driver stability while the car’s exhaust note has been enhanced with a sports exhaust system.
Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director, Mazda UK sais at the time: “The MX-5 has been our best known car for 22 years and with the GT4 and GT Concept on show, we are demonstrating that this car can compete with the more expensive race and performance cars but still remain true to its roots of affordable motoring with a strong focus on the driving experience.
“The Mazda Takeri gives a clear guide as to how the next Mazda6 will look. It will be the second car to use Mazda’s new SKYACTIV technology following on from the Mazda CX-5 which we launched in May.
“SKYACTIV technology reduces vehicle weight, improves fuel consumption and reduces CO2, it takes our cars into the realm of environmentally friendly emissions but with no compromise on the fun to drive attributes that are typical of our brand.”
The Mazda Takeri sedan concept was also proudly on display at Goodwood, with officials indicating that it will be the design template for the future Mazda6. Mazda racers Mark Ticehurst and Owen Mildenhall and kart racer Jade Paveley were present at Goodwood, with Jade being one of the youngest drivers at the festival at only 19 years of age.
