BMW M3 Muffler
Whether you own a BMW M3 Coupe or a BMW M3 Convertible, the overall performance of your M3 muffler can make or break your driving experience. It can also put a dent in your bank account if you do not know what your muffler is and is not supposed to do. The goal of this article is to give you a basic understanding of what mufflers do and to show you how to avoid some potentially expensive pitfalls.
How mufflers work
A muffler is an extension of your motorcycle/car/truck’s exhaust system. Every time you start your bike, car or truck and hit the gas, the purr or roar that you hear is controlled by your muffler. A muffler’s main purpose is to reduce or “muffle” the noise your engine makes whenever you are behind the wheel. Mufflers also help take some pressure off your engine by regulating exhaust. This, in turn, helps keep your engine from overheating. If your vehicle can’t “exhale” properly due to something obstructing the normal flow of engine exhaust, this air pollution, referred to as “back pressure,” can reduce your engine’s power. It can also be lethal to pedestrians and drivers. This is why high-performance exhaust systems are becoming the norm. A more advanced exhaust system equals less back pressure and greater overall engine performance.
Exhaust systems and sports cars
Exhaust systems are as unique as the sports cars they are found in. Some sports cars have single exhaust systems while others have dual exhaust systems. These systems can be altered based on the driver’s preferences. For example, sports car owners who really want to hear their car roar when they are on the road may consider going with a dual engine exhaust system to give them the sound they want in addition to other perks high-performance systems offer such as overall engine power boost, fuel efficiency, and price. Technically, single and dual exhaust systems do the same thing in terms of performance. They both regulate engine exhaust. However, the major differences between these two systems basically come down to aesthetics and sound. The dual system has two tailpipes, just as its name implies. It is also louder than a single exhaust system.
Getting help
It could be argued that most
luxury and/or sports car owners would rather leave maintenance to mechanics. However, there are those who prefer to take a more hands-on approach to car maintenance. If you are part of the latter group, you will be glad to know that you do not have to be a seasoned mechanic in order to install a high-performance exhaust system. However, you should be fairly knowledgeable about what is and is not considered “street legal” before you start to buy and install car parts for your M3. Car forums can be a godsend here because members often post videos and offer maintenance advice and product reviews that can help you avoid wasting money on unnecessary repairs and/or parts that you may be able to find at better prices elsewhere.
